Women Managers by National Economic Development Office

Although women make up almost half the UK labour force, only four per cent of middle and senior managers are women, and only one per cent at senior executive level. This represents a huge waste of potential mangerial talent. What are the reasons, and what measures can employers take now to remedy this? This report sets out to answer these questions and provide possible solutions. It is based upon a research survey commissioned from the Institute of Manpower Studies (IMS) by the National Economic Development Office (NEDO) in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Public Administration (RIPA). It considers: the use made of the managerial potential of women in the UK workforce, how employers achieve management positions, why women are less likely to be promoted than men, the factors affecting the development of women's managerial careers and what employers are doing to encourage women into management. The report concludes with a useful checklist for employers outlining the practical measures they can take to implement a corporate policy for improving the representation of women at managerial levels within their organizations.
