Women of the Highlands by Katharine Stewart
From the ancient druids to modern naturalists, farming girls to duchesses, Katharine Stewart traces the lives of women through medieval times, during the Clearance years, and in the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution. Individual stories intertwine with overall history to create a sense of Highland culture that is as intriguing as it is compelling.
Katherine Stewart was born in 1914 and is one of Britain's oldest living writers. During the war, she worked for the Admiralty in London. She then moved to Abriachan, near Inverness, where she ran a croft and wrote documentaries for the BBC. Her previous books include A Croft in the Hills, The Story of Loch Ness and The Crofting Way. She was instrumental in setting up the museum at Abriachan, and in 2005 received the Saltire Society Highland Branch Award for Contribution to the Understanding of Highland Culture, in recognition of her work.
