The World Encyclopedia of Armoured Fighting Vehicles by Jack Livesey
This book contains a lively history of armoured fighting vehicles from the beginning of the 20th century through to the present generation of lighter, faster and more agile AFVs. From the days before radio communication through to the World Wars, the Cold War and the birth of the Infantry Fighting Vehicle, the author highlights the varied roles AFVs have played, as well as how these adaptable vehicles have evolved and developed over time. The book includes two substantial and comprehensive A-Z sections forming an illustrated guide to over 170 AFVs. The first of these covers the period from 1900-45 when the major types were evolving. The second A-Z section focuses on the remarkable advances in AFV development post-World War II. This wonderfully illustrated book provides enthusiasts and historians with key information on these diverse and often underrated vehicles.
Jack Livesy love of armoured fighting vehicles was sparked off by a visit to the Imperial War Museum in London at the age of twelve. In his twenty years in the British Army, most of them spent with the Parachute Regiment, he not only learned to drive them but also trained as a specialist in Soviet military vehicles. Now retired from the Army, Jack works part-time for the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, which has the largest collection of Soviet military vehicles in Britain and a comprehensive collection of British military vehicles. In his spare time he is a freelance military historian, giving talks and lectures on AFVs and taking part in television programmes.
