World Press Photo 2017 by World Press Photo

Since 1955, the annual World Press Photo contest has set the standard in visual journalism. World Press Photo 2017 brings you the winners - the most striking images and compelling stories from 2016. Selected from over 80,000 pictures taken from 5,034 photojournalists and documentary photographers from 125 different countries, the prize-winning pictures are presented in a moving, sometimes disturbing document. World Press Photo 2017 both informs, and inspires an understanding of the world.

World Press Photo is an annual press photography competition with the primary goal of supporting professional photojournalism, stimulating innovations in the field, encouraging knowledge transfer, assisting in the creation of high professional standards in visual journalism, and promoting an open and unrestrained interchange of information. ⠀ At its annual Awards Presentation in Amsterdam on April 11, the World Press Photo Foundation presented the results of the 62nd annual World Press Photo Contest and the 9th annual World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest. ⠀ John Moore's image Crying Girl on the Border was named World Press Photo of the Year by the jury of the 2019 Photo Contest. Yanela Sanchez, a Honduras toddler, is seen screaming as she and her mother, Sandra Sanchez, are apprehended by US border officials in McAllen, Texas, on June 12, 2018. ⠀ As this photo was widely circulated, US Customs and Border Protection confirmed that Yanela and her mother were not among the thousands of people separated by US authorities.

But, following widespread criticism of the contentious practice, President Donald Trump reversed the policy on June 20. ⠀ This year, the World Press Photo Foundation created the World Press Photo Story of the Year award to highlight important stories. The Migrant Caravan by Pieter Ten Hoopen (Netherlands/Sweden) was selected as the World Press Picture Story of the Year by the jury. According to UN agencies, the winning series covers the greatest migrant caravan in recent memory, with up to 7,000 people, including at least 2,300 children.

The caravan, which was organized through a grassroots social media effort, left San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on October 12 and gathered individuals from Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala as word spread.
