World War II Warships by John Batchelor
All hands on deck This fine fleet of accurately detailed ships includes twenty-eight vessels deployed in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during World War I. Included -- among others -- are line drawings of the ill-fated PT-109, commanded by a young John F. Kennedy; one of the many German U-boats that sunk tons of American shipping during the conflict; the US Hornet, best remembered for launching Lt. Colonel James Doolittle's air raids on Tokyo; and the US Missouri, the battleship on which the Japanese surrendered. Identifying captions provide information on ship size, firepower, length of service, and other details.Batchelor has written about restaurants and travel since 1981. He is the restaurant reviewer for the Greensboro News & Record and formerly for the Winston-Salem Journal. Batchelor came across the idea for this book through his frequent judging of cooking competitions, including the Western North Carolina Chef's Challenge (restaurants compete in and around Asheville, N.C.) and the Fire on the Rock Chef's Challenge (restaurants in and around Blowing Rock and the High Country).
