Writing Scotland by Carl Macdougall
The book of the series will be written by the presenter, and while it will follow the format of the television series, it will deal with the issues at a greater depth; it will include textual extracts and also be illustrated. The book will also feature the work of photographer, Murdo Macleod, who has photographed most of the featured living writers. The eight half-hour documentaries stem from a core belief that Scotland's unique and distinctive writing tradition has continually defined the nation, established its identity and was the springboard upon which devolution was built. And now at the start of the twenty-first century, Scottish writers enjoy unprecedented international acclaim and have helped define Scotland's place in the modern world. Hopscotch are delighted with the series which aims to bring a popular approach to ideas television: As producer John Archer put it, 'I believe that what works best on television is passion, and it is through the passion of the presenter and interviewees that we intend to draw in the general viewer.'
Carl MacDougall edited and introduced a collection of short Scottish fiction under the title The Devil and the Giro which was published by Canongate in 1989. His own fiction has been published by Secker and Warburg, most notably his novel set in Glasgow, The Lights Below, which won the Winifred Holtby Prize. His other titles include Elvis Is Dead, a collection of short stories, Stone over Water (1988) and his most recent novel The Casanova Papers (1996) was shortlisted for the Saltire and the McVitie Awards. In 2001 he published a work of non-fiction, Painting The Forth Bridge, A Search for Scottish Identity. For the last 12 years he has been The Herald's Chief Fiction Reviewer, a post he has now left in order to pursue his own writing - and most specifically the book Writing Scotland.
