Writing Superheroes by Ah Dyson
Based on an ethnographic study in an urban classroom of seven to nine-year-olds, this is an examination of how school children use superhero stories in the classroom and in their peer groups. Dyson shows how the children's interest in popular culture gives rise to both literacy and social learning.Anne Haas Dyson is a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Social Worlds of Children Learning to Write in an Urban Primary School, Writing Superheroes, The Brothers and Sisters Learn to Write, and with Celia Genishi, Children, Language, and Literacy: Diverse Learners in Diverse Times.
