The Paris Commune in 1871 played a key role in the development of socialist thought. Son of a liberal terratenant, he studied artillery at the San Petersburg Artillery School and eventually became a member of the Imperial Guard. Envoyed to a military unit on the Polish border, he went missing without permission and was on the verge of being prosecuted for desertion. After leaving the army, he became interested at philosophy, particularly the work of the German philosophers Fichte and Hegel, and went on to study it in Mosc and San Petersburg.
