The Yankee Officer and the Southern Belle by Nell Robertson Chinchen

It began like a fairytale-amidst mint juleps and magnolias in Mississippi. But as their love grew, its fruit flourished and spread to a most unlikely place-across the mission fields of Africa. The Yankee Officer and the Southern Belle is the vivid recollection of how God called Nell and Jack Chinchen from the comforts of their "perfect" life to a risky, lifelong journey they would never regret. More than forty years ago, the Chinchens arrived in Liberia, West Africa, as missionaries. They had left family, thriving ministries and a successful business. Their new life in the jungle would bring perils: tropical diseases, witch doctors, fire and even rebel invasion. Yet joy overflowed in their faithfulness to God's call-training pastors, teaching children, pioneering medical ministry. And their work wouldn't stop at the boundaries of their bamboo mission station. As the ministry expanded, God led the Chinchens to establish African Bible Colleges and Radio ABC, sending the Gospel across the continent. Looking back now, as the Chinchens live and work in Malawi, Nell is certain about the author of her story. "Africa," she says... "the place that God had written on my heart before the foundation of the world."

"The story of these servants of God who have been tried by fire will enlighten you and your soul will be stirred to read about the warm heart of Africa that welcomed The Yankee Officer and the Southern Belle with drums in the night"

-- Franklin Graham (President & CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritans Purse)

"From the refined coast of Mississippi to the shores and jungles of Africa, behold God's faithfulness to this couple and His shaping and sharpening them into instruments for His glory."

-- Ligon Duncan (Chancellor and CEO, Reformed Theological Seminary)

"The Chinchen's are the real deal. The many thousands of lives that they have touched are testament to the calling that God has placed on them. Africa and the world are richer for their obedient service to our Lord. This is a must-read for all who love to see the Hand of God at work today!"

-- John B. Sorensen (President, Evangelism Explosion International)

"Wherever you find yourself, I can attest that Nell and Jack's love story for Christ, each other and the world is contagious. Once encountered and embraced it will also leave you forever changed."

-- Bob Botsford

"From my perspective over many years, I know of no more faithful and effective mission ministry than African Bible Colleges. This book is an inspiring story of God at work in the lives of a family willing to follow Him in faith to the ends of the earth.

-- Robert C. Cannada

"Short pithy chapters, challenging adventure, and a good romance prove once more that truth can be more fascinating than fiction."

-- O. Palmer Robertson

"I am quite sure that this "autobiography" will stir and embolden thoughtful readers to strike out on their own, eager to face "crosses" in order to end up with "crowns." I know it is stirring and emboldening me!"

-- Henry Krabbendam
