Yoga and Vegetarianism by Sharon Gannon
According to Sharon Gannon, the single most important part of your yoga practice is the strict adherence to a vegetarian diet - a diet free of needless cruelty, harm, and injustice. Gannon offers truth and wisdom from a tradition of spiritual practice thousands of years old and explains how to apply these practices to our modern lifestyles. Drawing upon her studies of Vedic traditions, Gannon explores how the practices of yoga are historically and structurally tied to an ethical vegetarian lifestyle. Integral to each another, both yoga and vegetarianism form a framework for physical and spiritual attunement, and when practiced as a whole provide the path not only to physical health, but to spiritual enlightenment.Sharon Gannon is altering people's perceptions of spirituality, life, themselves, others, animals, and the environment. She co-founded the Jivamukti Yoga system with David Life, a road to enlightenment through compassion for all beings. Shri Brahmananda Saravati, Swami Nirmalananda, and Sri K. Saravati, her teachers, blessed her. Pattabhi Jois is a pioneer in the field of spiritual activism through yoga. The Jivamukti Yoga practice emphasizes vegetarianism as a basic value.
The Jivamukti method is one of the nine types of hatha yoga that are currently performed around the world. She has been labeled an pioneer by Yoga Journal, and Vanity Fair has credited her with making yoga chic and hip. Gannon has written a number of books and produced a number of yoga-related films and music CDs. She was awarded the Compassionate Living Award in 2008.
She lives in a remote woodland sanctuary in upstate New York when she is not traveling or teaching yoga.
