Walliwigs is a thin and scrawny, strange-looking bird who, after being dumped in Martha's hen yard and ridiculed by all the other birds, is literally taken under Martha's wing and given her unconditional love. Then a visiting ornithologist identifies him as a rare species of parrot.Joan Rankin has illustrated over twenty-five children's books. In 1986, she won the HAUM Dann Retief Prize for Children's Book Art in South Africa, and in 1991, she won the Katrina Harris Award for Children's Book Illustration in the United States. Karma Wilson's A Frog in the Bog and Louise Borden's Going to First Grade are two of the books she has illustrated. She resides in Johannesburg, South Africa, with her husband and three daughters.
