Young Adult Literature by Michael Cart
Today's young adult literature is every bit as complex as the audience it's written for, unflinchingly addressing such topics as homosexuality, mental illness, AIDS and drug abuse. In this much expanded revision of his 1996 book, veteran author Michael Cart shows how the best of contemporary young adult literature has evolved to tackle such daunting subjects without resorting to sensationalism.Michael Cart is a nationally renowned authority in YA fiction, as well as a writer, presenter, consultant, and lecturer. He is the author or editor of twenty books, including the LGBT coming-of-age novel My Father's Scar, which was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults; From Romance to Realism: 50 Years of Growth and Development; and Carte Blanche, which publishes monthly in Booklist magazine. He is the former director of the Beverly Hills (California) Public Library and a previous president of the Young Adult Library Services Association. Jenkins' The Heart Has Its Reasons is a critical history of gay/lesbian/queer material in young adult literature. Love and Sex: Ten True Tales, Necessary Noise: True Stories About Our Families, and How Beautiful the Ordinary: Twelve Stories of Identity are among his many anthologies. In 2008, he was the inaugural recipient of the YALSA/Greenwood Publishing Group Service to Young Adults Achievement Prize, and in 2000, he received the Grolier Foundation Award for his commitment to the stimulation of young adults. Cart is a resident of Columbus, Indiana.
