Your Mother's Tongue by Stephen Burgen
This work provides an exploration of insults and swearwords in the European Union. It shows that what is invective in one country is sweet talk in another, explaining why you should never call a Finn a Swede, a Portugese woman a nanny-goat or a Spanish one a vixen.
Stephen Burgen lived in Canada until he was 11, when his family returned to Britain. He first visited Barcelona in the 1970s and settled there in 2001 as the Spanish correspondent for The Times. In recent years he has worked as a freelance journalist, contributing regularly to the Guardian.
