Joe Hyams (1923-2008) was a columnist and bestselling author most known for his biographies of such Hollywood stars as Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, and Lauren Bacall. Hyams became involved in the martial arts during his service in the US Army, where he was frequently attacked for being Jewish. His years of studying with such figures as Bruce Lee and Ed Parker laid the groundwork for his 1979 book Zen in the Martial Arts.
