Proud Island Summary

Proud Island by Peadar O'Donnell

An island community faces its final struggle for survival. The herring shoals move beyond the reach of the islanders' small boats. Hughie Duffy, who spent time in prison and developed political ideas there, knows that the only answer is bigger boats - but there are difficulties with the government. The local 'gombeen man' sells an island holding to strangers and a No Trespass sign is put up. The close-knit community is under threat. The problem which has dogged all such island peoples emerges - survival or emigration?

Proud Island Reviews

'Peadar O'Donnell has once again written a novel which rises above the level of description and nostalgia and which places him among the few writers who have written for the people rather than of the people.' -- Michael D. Higgins, The Sunday Press
'It's a familiar dual, that between the land of the heart and the promised land of the imagination ... in Proud Island Peadar O'Donnell has quietly articulated his ideal of a socialist republic.' -- The Irish Times * The Irish Times *
'I liked the story for its slow unfolding rhythm.' -- The Guardian * The Guardian *
