CHANNEL ISLANDS OCCUP & LIB Summary

CHANNEL ISLANDS OCCUP & LIB by Asa Briggs

The Channel Islands were the only part of Britain to be occupied by the Germans during World War II. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of their liberation, this is a record of life on the Channel islands under Nazi rule, and of the Liberation itself. It sets out to show the contrast between the peaceful, pre-war atmosphere of the sunny holiday islands and the shadow of fear, isolation and shortages under which islanders were forced to live for five years. A variety of memorabilia such as letters, diaries and contemporary photographs, serve to clarify the picture of the occupation years. Publication is timed to coincide with exhibitions at London's Imperial War Museum and also on the islands of Guernsey and Jersey.

Table of Contents

The threat of invasion in June 1940; the arrival of the Germans and the imposition of miltary rule; fortification of the islands and the use of forced labour; daily life for the islanders during the occupation - rationing, shortages and other restrictions; the deportation of some islanders to internment camps and concentration camps; living with the enemy - resistance and collaboration; the excitement of liberation in May 1945.
