Glasgow Summary

Glasgow by Charles Jamieson

Glasgow is a name redolent with vivid images of a colourful past: visions of magnificent ocean liners gliding into the River Clyde and being towed out to sea to begin their adventurous lives; tobacco lords whose determination and skill brought great wealth from the Americas and beyond, great comedians, actors and artists; Sir William Burrell and his collection; Victorian architecture; Alexander 'Greek' Thomson and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Glasgow is made up of layer upon layer of people, places, happenings and history.

The Glasgow we have today is the result of over a thousand years of struggle for survival; struggle to make itself heard, to overcome the hardships of day to day life, to stirke out and succeed in trade and industry, bringing wealth to the city whilst trying to contain and look after its growing population. It is this ability to survive, this determination in the face of gritty reality, which gives the people of Glasgow their humanity and their humour.

This book is a visual celebration of Glasgow, with an elegant and informed text which illuminates this fertile, complicated and much loved city.

Glasgow Reviews

West-coasters will love 'Glasgow', a collection of photographs depicting some of the architectural highlights found in Scotland's biggest city... Capturing the beauty of the place and the diversity of its people, Jamieson also provides a commentary to illuminate his images, showing Glasgow's transformation from the second city of the Empire to its current incarnation as a centre of arts and culture. || The Glasgow depicted in Jamieson's lens is a confident metropolis striding with purpose. || Frances Lincoln seems to have cornered the market in descriptive and excellently photographed books. || A celebration of all that has made Glasgow great. || This book happily marries the best of Glasgow from the past, in particular some breathtaking architecture, with the stylish developments of the present in what amounts to a fitting tribute to a proud city and its people. || This book does not purport to be a theoretical treatise; it is written to inform and should sit comfortably on any architect's coffee table. It is a valuable addition to Glasgow's resurgence and captures the city's unique architectural past.

He has just returned from Maine where he has been taking photographs of Penobscot Bay for a new series of works.
