The author has written a literary detective work about Tolkien's inspiration and sources. He shows how the Lord of the Rings is the result of an ancient story-telling tradition dating back to the dawn of western culture, and how Tolkien created his own mythology for the 20th century by drawing on the world's primary myths and legends.
