The Sustainability and Climate Change Curriculum Outdoors: Key Stage 2 Summary

The Sustainability and Climate Change Curriculum Outdoors: Key Stage 2: Quality curriculum-linked outdoor education for pupils aged 7-11 by Deborah Lambert

Promoting the inclusion of climate change and sustainability issues within the primary curriculum, this cutting-edge guide provides age-appropriate activities, curriculum links and opportunities for progression in knowledge and skills across lower and upper KS2. Designed to bring contemporary issues to life, the set of progressions include engaging and detailed lesson plans based around the Science National Curriculum throughout KS2. The book introduces essential curriculum concepts and teaches species identification, showing pupils how to encourage care and action for the natural world through outdoor activities linked to key curriculum goals. It demonstrates ways to progress children’s learning through leadership in a model science curriculum and by the reformation of their own school grounds. Situating this teaching outside the classroom ensures that the developing concepts and knowledge are grounded in the real world, and being outdoors also has huge benefits for children’s mental health and wellbeing. The guidance and templates for development planning are underpinned by current research, while vivid case studies bring these ideas to life.

The Sustainability and Climate Change Curriculum Outdoors: Key Stage 2 Reviews

This book is a significantly useful tool for teachers who are interested in teaching children about climate change and sustainability in an active way in the outdoors. There is nothing more important than creating children who are happy healthy learners with a deep respect and understanding for the natural environment and this book helps teachers to do exactly that. * Louise Edwards, Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development *
Those in educational settings, from strategic leadership through to teachers, teaching assistants and parents, will be inspired and motivated with the agency and permission of providing a culture for learning outdoors this new book brings. * Matthew Dampier, Head Teacher Droxford Junior School *
A pioneering resource that emphasizes the importance of embedding climate change into every lesson. Invaluable for educators seeking to create a generation of environmentally conscious and socially responsible individuals. The author team’s passion for sustainability education shines through every page, inspiring teachers to make a difference in the lives of their students and equipping young minds with the tools to tackle the pressing challenges of climate change. I wholeheartedly endorse this book and encourage educators, administrators, and policymakers to embrace this resource as a transformative tool in shaping a sustainable and resilient future for our planet. * Andrew Dowling, Schools Programme Lead for Outdoor Education, Coventry City Council *
Climate change and sustainability are the defining themes of our age. We welcome this book in assisting primary school staff in understanding more about the issues involved and taking action in their schools. -- Carley Sefton, CEO, Learning through Landscapes
These books are a timely and welcome addition to help primary teachers grow their confidence and competence to undertake great teaching - outdoors! * Former headteacher and education consultant specialising in outdoor learning, @CreativeSTAR Juliet Robertson *
Enough to convince even the hardened ‘indoor’ teacher that the outdoors has much to offer and these books give a step by step introduction of how it can be incorporated into their scheme of work along with their other planning. Overall I have been really impressed with this series. * Blogger, craigarmiger.wordpress.com Craig Armiger *
The National Curriculum Outdoors books are a fantastic resource for primary schools. [...] The books enable teachers to use their whole school sites and local areas as their learning spaces, and encourage active, imaginative and engaging curriculum teaching and learning. * Education Visits Coordinator Dave Scourfield *
