Summary

A powerful account of a woman's journey as she learns to triumph despite the pain inflicted on her. A heart-wrenching story told with commendable delicacy. The Marks Left on Her tells a tale centred on mixed-heritage, parental relationships and why the world calls for so many women to be forged by pain.

The Marks Left on Her Summary

The Marks Left on Her by Di Lebowitz

DAUGHTER is navigating her otherness as the only mixed-race child in her Hong Kongese family with a bipolar mother, absentee father and staunchly catholic grandmother. GIRL is trying to navigate a world in which she is ignored and mistreated until a sexual assault sets her on a self-destructive spiral. SURVIVOR is battling monsters both real and imagined and coming out victorious as she pieces together her history, her traumas and her strength. A remarkable story written with a courage inspired by the #MeToo movement.

About Di Lebowitz

Di was born and raised in Hong Kong but spent the majority of her adult life in the UK. She is of both Jewish and Hong Kongese descent. Her debut novel 'The Marks Left on Her' started off as a way to attribute language to her pain and recovery in an attempt to make sense of it all. Soon it grew into a small collection of buried memories that evolved into a self-examination of what it means to be a girl, a woman and a survivor. In her own words: There are innumerable girls and women out there who continue to suffer or have suffered and survived. This book is for them, so they can be reminded and know that they are not alone.
