Making Mortal Choices Summary

Making Mortal Choices: Three Exercises in Moral Casuistry by Hugo Adam Bedau (Austin Fletcher Professor of Philosophy, Austin Fletcher Professor of Philosophy, Tufts University)

Bedau demonstrates the usefulness of casuistry, or the method of cases in arriving at moral decisions. He examines well-known cases that compel us to consider questions about who ought to survive when not all can. By doing so, we learn something about how we actually reason concerning such life and death situations, as well as about how we ought to reason if we wish both to be consistent and properly respect human life.

Making Mortal Choices Reviews

This is a book which can be recommended as a graphic and colourful way in which to approach ethical theory and the problem of making difficult moral choices * MIND, Vol.110, No.439 *
The essays do an excellent job of motivating deep philosophical thought and exhibiting the worth of philosophical reflection. In addition they deepen the reader's understanding of both life and death choices and various important moral principles.-Stephen Nathanson, Northwestern University.
