Communicable Disease Control Handbook Summary

Communicable Disease Control Handbook by Jeremy Hawker

The term "communicable disease control" describes the way in which outbreaks of infectious diseases are managed to prevent their transmission and spread. This includes surveillance, prevention, investigation and response to cases. This book is a practical guide. In Europe the range of diseases and infectious agents differs from that of the US, and yet the only real reference in this field is an American book: "Benenson: Control of Communicable Disease Manual". This is published by the American Public Health Association every five years and is considered to be a good resource. The problem is that it covers many diseases that do not occur in Europe and omits a number of important European infections. Furthermore, the epidemiological information it gives is based on the US population. It does not consider the public health issues in a European and UK context. This volume aims to fill the gap in the European market.

Communicable Disease Control Handbook Reviews

"Although the book is mainly targeted at local CCDcs and others in the UK as a practical handbook, most of the content would also be highly relevant for colleagues in other European countries."

--Dr K Ekdahl, Epidemiologist, Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control, Solna

"This book will be a very useful resource for all professionals involved in the control of communicable disease both in the community and hospitals... As an easily digestible reference book to aid the answering of telephone enquiries, or helping to ensure that the management of an outbreak for those with limit experience is progressed logically, this book as outlines, will provide valuable assistance."

--Judith Sedgwick, Surveillence Co-ordinator, Nosocomial Infection National Surveillance Scheme, PHLS

From the forward by Sir Donald Acheson:

..".(this book) seems to me to incorporate all that is best in the tradition of (the CDSC) - sound science, attention to detail and an essentially practical approach."

"This outstanding and I suspect unique handbook is packed with useful information. I believe it will prove to be an essential resource for those, not only within the United Kingdom but throughout Europe, who have responsibility for the identification and control of infectious disease. It will also be an indispensable text for students aspiring to a career in this important field."
