About Leo Tolstoy

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was descended from a long line of Russian nobles. His high birth and refined intelligence set him apart from other Russian writers of the time. He spent a short time in university before joining the military as an officer. After a short time, he left the army, appalled by the waste and horrors of conflict.Increasingly disillusioned with Russian society, Tolstoy evolved into a political and revolutionary figure. He developed ideas such as peaceful protest; ideals which were later upheld by iconic leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Writers including Marcel Proust and Virginia Woolf have praised Tolstoy as an inspiration. Tolstoy's works are accessible to all, poignantly human, and make for an illustrious listening experience. Read by acclaimed British actors Edward Petherbridge and Diana Quick.
