Environmental Management Summary

Environmental Management: Readings and Case Studies by Lewis Owen

The management of the environment, whether locally, nationally or globally, is of crucial economic, social and scientific importance. Uncontrolled exploitation has led and will continue to lead to the irreversible loss of valued and unique resources, to human misery, and to costly natural disasters. Effective and safe intervention in natural processes requires, as this book vividly demonstrates, a depth of scientific knowledge and a wide range of social and technical skills. This book presents thirty-six key articles on environmental management. Arranged in six thematic parts, each individually introduced and with annotated sections of further reading, it provides a stimulating companion and general introduction to the field of environmental management.

Lewis Owen is lecturer in geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, and co-author with Kevin Pickering of An Introduction to Global Environmental Issues. Tim Unwin is reader in Geography at Royal Holloway and the author of The Place of Geography; he has also written extensively on the geography of the wine industry.
