Three Women Summary

Three Women: a novel by Lucy Tertia George

THREE WOMEN is a story spanning 1920 to 1990 of three women who leave their childhood homes to pursue their dreams and escape their upbringing. Born in poverty in Sicily in 1920, Josepina uses her cunning and the magic she learns from a neighbour to make her way to Brooklyn, raise her family and free herself from her mother's disapproval, her oppressive husband and her own daughter's scheming partner. Veronica, a Sheffield girl with an extraordinary singing voice, senses an opportunity to escape her small life, but juggling family and a creative career in 1960s London is a challenging road to navigate. Natalie, Veronica's daughter, marries Josepina's grandson as a way to leave behind her chaotic childhood, only to find herself amongst New York's drug dealers and petty criminals, with only Josepina, the family matriarch, to turn to for advice. THREE WOMEN is about how three resourceful characters contend with social expectations and face up to the consequences of their hearts' desires.
