CAN SHE ESCAPE THE DARK SHADOWS OF HER CHILDHOOD?

Born into the squalor of the notorious Ash-Pits, young Susan Lucket is determined to raise herself above the poverty of her childhood. Discovering she has a natural talent for nursing, she forges a new life for herself as a midwife - independent and unmarried, she is a woman far ahead of her time.

When Edward Calthorpe, youngest son of the privileged landowner, offers her marriage, the memory of her terrible childhood returns to haunt her. And when Edward's wayward brother seduces her beloved younger sister Polly - and then betrays her in the most brutal of ways - Susan faces losing everything she has struggled for.

Can she find the strength to fight for her right to happiness?

About Maggie Bennett

Maggie Bennett was born in Hampshire. When she left school at eighteen she started general nursing training and, after a year as a staff nurse, she went on to train as a midwife. Her career was interrupted by marriage at thirty-five, and she moved to Manchester where her two daughters were born; she later returned to work as a midwife until her retirement in 1991. Having been an avid reader and scribbler all her life, she took a correspondence course in creative writing after her husband's death in 1983, and started writing articles and short stories. Her first novel, A Child's Voice Calling, was published by Arrow in 2002.
