Summary
In the summer of 1887 a chance meeting between the painter Philip Wilson Steer and a young woman leads to an intense, forbidden love. As the days grow shorter so family ties and Victorian proprieties close in, bringing a tragic conclusion. This book won the Winifred Holtby Prize.
