The Munros in Winter Summary

The Munros in Winter: 277 Summits in 83 Days by Martin Moran

In 1985 mountain guide Martin Moran achieved the first completion of all 277 Munros* in a single winter with the support and companionship of his wife Joy. Their success was a feat of dedicated mountaineering and effective teamwork through the storms, snows and avalanches of an epic winter season in the Scottish Highlands. Martin's account of the winter journey became a classic mountain narrative, combining his passionate enthusiasm for the mountains with humorous insights into a marriage put to the test through three months of living in a camper van. It was described as 'the best guidebook to the Munros' by mountain writer Jim Perrin. The book inspired many other climbers and runners to pick up the gauntlet in pursuit of new feats of endurance on Scotland's hills, and is now reissued with full colour photographs plus an introductory update by the author on how the 'Munros in Winter' changed his life.

The Munros in Winter Reviews

'The winter completion of the Munros in a single push was not only a tremendous team effort but also Martin and Joy's great love story. It was an amazing Odyssey and The Munros in Winter is a superb account. Between its quality of writing and honesty, and Martin's delightful touches of humour, no wonder it has provided inspiration to so many people over the years.'

-- Sir Chris Bonington

'The first and finest account of climbing Scotland's winter mountains, the greatest challenge our hills have to offer.'

-- Cameron McNeish

About Martin Moran

Martin Moran was one of Britain's most experienced mountaineers and guides. Born on North Tyneside he studied geography at Cambridge University before moving to Sheffield with his new wife, Joy, to train as a chartered accountant. In 1985 he qualified as a British and International IFMGA Mountain Guide and moved to the North-West Highlands with Joy to found their climbing and guiding enterprise, Moran Mountain. He made a dozen pioneering ascents in the Himalaya and climbed over a hundred new winter routes in Scotland. In May 2019, Martin tragically lost his life in the Himalaya while on a pioneering expedition with seven other climbers.
