Skilful Means Summary

Skilful Means: A Concept in Mahayana Buddhism by Michael Pye

Mahayana is one of the great traditions of Buddhism, much in need of a good introductory volume, and the principle of skilful means is its philosophical core.

Clearly explains a difficult concept, looking at its origins in the Lotus Sutra, its history and current context

First published in 1979, this was the first full scale exploration of skilful means. It remains the most thorough among its few modern competitors

Described by the late Ninian Smart as 'a major contribution to the understanding of Buddhism'

Skilful Means Reviews

'This is a most welcome reissue of Michael Pye's hard-to-obtain but highly influential 1978 study of the concept of skilful means in Buddhism.' - Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies
