Multimodality Imaging Innovations In Adult Congenital Heart Disease Summary

Multimodality Imaging Innovations In Adult Congenital Heart Disease: Emerging Technologies and Novel Applications by Pastora Gallego

This book focuses on congenital heart disease (CHD) and emerging imaging technologies. It covers all clinically relevant aspects of the fascinating new cardiac imaging technologies, including a comprehensive explanation of their basic principles, practical aspects of novel clinical applications, and detailed descriptions of specific uses in the broad spectrum of clinically important adult CHD.

Innovations and emerging technologies for diagnosis and therapeutics, evaluation and treatment are continually evolving, and due to these advances in non-invasive diagnosis, there has been a significant improvement in the survival rates for CHD patient. Novel approaches to trans-catheter interventions and advances in echocardiography, MRI and CT imaging are being developed and incorporated into routine clinical practice, while emerging three-dimensional printing technologies are fundamentally affecting patient care, research, trainee education, and interactions between multidisciplinary teams, patients, and caregivers. In addition, translational technologies on the horizon promise to take this nascent field even further. Exploring the applicability of these emerging technologies in improving our understanding of complex congenital cardiac defect anatomy and physiology will provide new treatment options for this unique population.

Written by experts in the field who are also involved in patient care, this book discusses the practical application of innovations in advanced multimodality imaging in the daily clinical routine and offers tips and tricks for beginners.

About Pastora Gallego

Pastora Gallego is a Cardiologist with particular expertise in adult congenital heart disease and advanced cardiac imaging. She obtained her degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Seville and completed her specialization in cardiology at La Paz University Hospital in Madrid. She has held visiting research positions at Toronto General Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital, and she earned her postgraduate degree with a doctoral thesis on Echocardiographic Assessment of Functional Anatomy of Aortic Regurgitation. She was Head of the Cardiac Imaging Section at Hospital Virgen Macarena and was subsequently founding Director of the Intercenter Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocio in Seville, Spain. She participates in ACHD educational activities and is involved in ACHD-focused organizational activities, including serving as the chair of Executive Committee of the Registry of Adult Congenital Cardiac Disease in Andalusia (RACCA), conducted since 2012. Since 2016 she has been a nucleus member of the ESC Working Group on ACHD and she is on the Spanish Society of Cardiology's Paediatric Cardiology and Congenital Cardiac Disease Council. She has made major contributions through clinical research and teaching in the field of cardiac imaging and congenital heart disease for the last 20 years and (co)- authored more than 50 peer-reviewed papers. She also has experience in the subfield of publishing as Associate Editor of Revista Espanola de Cardiologia, the official scientific journal of the Spanish Society of Cardiology.

Israel Valverde is a Consultant in Paediatric Cardiology - Virgen del Rocio University Hospital, Seville (Spain) and Locum Consultant in Paediatric Cardiology - Evelina London Children Hospital, London (United Kingdom). He obtained his doctorate in Imaging Sciences and Biomedical Engineering at King's College London (United Kingdom). He was appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Imaging Sciences & Biomedical Engineering at King's College London in 2015. His area of expertise is congenital cardiovascular magnetic resonance and 3D printing in congenital and structural heart disease. He has published 60 indexed research articles in high impact journals with more than 750 citations; 3 book chapters; and 50 communications in congresses.
