A postscript reflects on the period of Harold Wilson's Labour government from 1964 to 1970. Reviewing the book on first publication in 1961, Michael Foot described it as 'the most important contribution made for many years to the study of the way the Labour Party works'. He was the founder of the Socialist Register and author of Marxism and Politics, The State in Capitalism Society (new edition published 2009) and Socialism for a Sceptical Age. He taught for many years at the London School of Economics before taking up the Chair of Politics at the University of Leeds. He subsequently taught at Brandeis in Boston, York University in Toronto and the Graduate Centre of the City University of New York.

About Ralph Miliband

\Ralph Miliband was one of the key intellectual figures of the British New Left and the founder of the Socialist Register. He was a professor at the London School of Economics, Brandeis University, York University--Toronto, and the Graduate Centre of the City University of New York and was chair of politics at the University of Leeds. He is the author of Divided Societies: Class Struggle in Contemporary Capitalism, Marxism and Politics, and Socialism for a Sceptical Age. He is the coeditor of A Dictionary of Marxist Thought.
