Bitter Sweet Summary

Bitter Sweet by Stefan Popper

After the Nazis march into Vienna, an innocent child and his twin sister escape with their parents. His subsequent childhood years are spent living as a refugee in Cyprus and Tanzania before finally settling in the UK. Written by Stefan Popper, with his twin sister Lisa's own recollection of events, this is his incredible early life story. Many of Stefan's family did not survive the Holocaust. Those who did were scattered around the world. Here Stefan also shares their true and varied accounts of survival, showing not only the very worst of what humanity is capable of, but also the very best. Bitter Sweet is an honest account of an Austrian Jewish refugee growing up in one of the darkest times in history.

About Stefan Popper

Stefan was born with a twin sister in 1932 in Vienna, Austria, to a Jewish family. His father was a barrister and his mother was the daughter of the co-owners of the Cafe Herrenhof, a famous Viennese coffee house. Following the Anschluss in 1938, Stefan left Vienna and led the life of a refugee. Stefan was baptised in Christ Church in Vienna during the mass baptism for Jews. He made a more heartfelt conversion to Christianity as a teenager at a mission school in Tanzania. He then made sweets in Cyprus and studied for an external law degree before settling in the UK in 1957. Stefan died in March 2016 having written his final draft of this book. His wife Wendy and three remaining children have published his story in his memory.
