The Sorcerer's Apprentice by John Richardson, author of A Life of Picasso, is a richly entertaining memoir of a life with the brilliant but controversial art expert, Douglas Cooper - a fiendish, colourful, Evelyn Waugh-like figure who single-handedly assembled the world's most important private collection of Cubist paintings. John Richardson is a contributor to the New York Review of Books and Vanity Fair. The first of his two volumes of A Life of Picasso won the Whitbread Book of the Year Award in 1991. He has been elected to the British Academy and was a Slade Professor of Art at Oxford for 1995-1996. He lives in New York and Connecticut.
