Edwin Tappan Adney (1868 - 1950) - artist, writer, ethnographer, historian and modelmaker of unparalleled ability - singlehandedly preserved the fading history of Native bark canoe construction in North America by building 100 historically accurate canoe models, many based on canoes that were the last remaining examples of their type. These 1:5 scale models (now on display at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia) were built to ensue that future canoe builders had exact reproductions for reference.
