Julie Ricci Mancini has loved birds since she was a toddler, when her father built a window shelf for her to feed pigeons as a form of mealtime amusement. When she was six years old, her parents gave her her first bird, a parakeet named Charlie, and she had a unique African grey parrot named Sindbad for more than 10 years. When the editors of Pet Health News asked her to write on bird health in 1988, her interest in birds combined with her love of writing. She helped with the debut issue of Birds USA, a popular annual journal for first-time pet bird owners, and went on to become managing editor, then editor, of Bird Talk in 1992. Julie has been a freelance writer since 1997, specializing on pet-related topics.
