The Wellcome Library is devoted to the history and understanding of medicine. It was collected in the early 20th century by a wealthy businessman Henry S Wellcome. This book presents an introduction to Wellcome Library's special collections. It offers snapshots of their quality and variety, guiding the reader through some of the Library's wonders.

Tony Gould was for many years a BBC radio producer and literary editor of New Society magazine. He is a writer and reviewer, and two of his books, A Summer Plague: Polio and Its Survivors and Don't Fence Me In: Leprosy in Modern Times, drew on research he carried out in the Wellcome Library.
