Surfs Up is an animated feature that goes behind the scenes of the high-octane world of competitive penguin surfing. The film profiles Cody Maverick, an up-and-coming surfer as he enters his first pro competition. Inspired by his hero, a legendary wave rider named Big Z, Cody leaves his family and his town of Shiverpool, Antarctica to travel to Pen Gu Island for the Big Z Memorial Surf Off. Cody believes that winning will bring him the admiration and respect he desires. But when he unexpectedly comes face to face with a washed up old surfer named The Geek, Cody begins to understand that the greatest champion isnt always the one who comes in first.Chris Buck is a photographer and director based in New York and Los Angeles. His portraits have won placement in the prestigious annual American Photography over forty times, and he was the first recipient of the Arnold Newman Portrait Prize.
Buck is best known for his over 30 years of portrait photography, including many of the most recognizable names today: Donald Trump, Barack Obama, Jay-Z, Joaquin Phoenix, Kristen Stewart, Cindy Sherman, Willie Nelson, Steve Martin, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Kendrick Lamar.
Chris Buck grew up in Toronto, Canada. His father worked for the Kodak company, creating an early and natural connection to photography. He moved to New York in 1990 and established himself as a sought-after commercial and editorial photographer. His clients include Coca-Cola, Google, The New Yorker, Guardian Weekend and The New York Times Magazine.
His two previously published two books are Uneasy: Portraits 1986-2016, and Presence: The Invisible Portrait.
