She has been a columnist for the journal, and has published essays and articles in its pages. Now, she has shared her knowledge of "The Lancet's" historic content, to make this an essential reference work for anyone with an interest in the art and science of medicine, the medical world, health and disease, care and cure.

Dr Ruth Richardson is an interdisciplinary historian and broadcaster who has published widely on the history of medicine, architecture, public health and periodical publication. She has given lectures for academic and medical audiences across Europe and North America. Her history of the corpses in UK dissection rooms, Death, Dissection and the Destitute (Chicago University Press, 2000) is now a standard work and teaching text in medical history courses in the UK and USA. Her massive Builder Illustrations Index (co-authored with Robert Thorne) was awarded the Wheatley Gold Medal. She has co-edited two volumes on medical humanities for the Royal College of Physicians of London, and is also the author of a new historical introduction to the latest edition of Gray's Anatomy (Elsevier, 2005). Dr Richardson is a Scholar in the History of Science at the University of Cambridge, and Senior Research Fellow in History at the University of Hertfordshire at Hatfield. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Examiner in the history of medicine at the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, London. Dr Richardson has been a regular reader of The Lancet since 1975 and a contributor to the journal since 1995. Most recently she co-authored a paper with Professor Brian Hurwitz, for a recent Christmas issue, on The Penny Lancet.
