When she was a teenager, her family moved to Australia, and she received her education in Melbourne and Paris. She's also the author of a novella, Springtime, and four previous books, including the Miles Franklin Award-winning Questions of Travel and the Man Booker Prize-longlisted The Lost Dog. De Kretser presently resides in Sydney with her spouse, Chris Andrews, a poet and translator. She is an Honorary Associate of the University of Sydney's English Department.
