He is a former Fellow of Keble College, Oxford University, and an Emeritus Professor of Pure Mathematics at the Open University. He is also an Emeritus Professor of Geometry at Gresham College, London. He is also a Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics. He has published and edited over 40 books on the subject, including Lewis Carroll in Numberland (Penguin, 2008), Four Colors Suffice (Princeton University Press, 2009), Combinatorics: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2016), and Euler's Pioneering Equation (OUP, 2018). He has received the Lester Ford award and the Pólya prize from the Mathematical Society of America for his excellent expository writing, as well as the Stanton Medal from the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications for his outreach initiatives in combinatorics.
