
Surreal Technology by Scott Tilley
Merriam-Webster's word of the year for 2016 was surreal. According to the online dictionary, surreal is used to express a reaction to something shocking or surprising. Surreal is also a good word to describe some of the key events in the technology world that took place in 2016. In particular, advances in artificial intelligence and big data, and continuing problems with cybersecurity. This is Volume 6 in the Technology Today series, a collection of Scott Tilley's newspaper columns that appear weekly in Florida Today.Scott Tilley is the Director of Computer Education at the Florida Institute of Technology, where he is a Professor in the Department of Education and Interdisciplinary Studies. He is the Chair of the IEEE Web Systems Evolution (WSE) Steering Committee and a Former Chair of the ACM's SIGDOC (Special Interest Group on Design of Communication). He is a Distinguished Speaker for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Software engineering and computing education are two of his key interests, and his software engineering research focuses on software testing, cloud computing, and system migration. Computing literacy, instructional technology, and STEM outreach are all areas of Scott's work in computing education. He contributes a weekly piece to the Florida Today newspaper (Gannett) called Technology Today.
