Our protagonist, a brown-skinned explorer with a headful of bouncy beaded braids (which fetchingly fall up as she first pokes her head through the portal where up is down) is clearly a fan of other worlds (her nightie sports a red image of Saturn in complement to the mirror girl's blue, and she's looking into a telescope on the back cover) who's made for exploring, and her cat's silent but determined progress provides an entertaining visual thread.
