In 1993, he found himself atop a Colombian volcano called Galeras as it erupted unexpectedly, killing several of his colleagues - his survival being equally, if not more, unexpected. Instead of jacking the job in, he turned to thinking about what motivates volcanologists to undertake the hazardous work that they do, unravelling the mysteries of volcanoes in an attempt to make places like Tokyo, Jakarta and Mexico City safer places to live. This absorbing book is the result of his research. Covering the cultural and physical impact of volcanoes from Vesuvius' eruption in AD79 to the present day, Williams works back from his own life-endangering experiences to examine the volatile mounds themselves and the people who work with them.
