Horatio Nelson was an extraordinary letter writer - vivid and frank - and his collection of letters has bee compared with those of Pepys, Byron and Keats. Yet, incredibly, the one great edition of these letters, edited by Nicolas and published between 1844 and 1846 h as never been reprinted despite its crucial importance to our understanding of Nelson and his times.
