Résumé

Children should love to experience Kate's magical freedom as she changes into a cat and roams the countryside, free to become anyone and do anything, while the moon looks down from the sky, and everyone else is fast asleep.

Kate, the Cat and the Moon Résumé

Kate, the Cat and the Moon David Almond

'Once, in a shining night, while the moon looked down and the stars glittered in the endless sky, and all the house was lost in dreams... the little girl woke up and heard a cat. Miaow, called the cat. Miaow.'

David Almond is known for his subtle and intelligent imagination. This, his first picture book, demonstrates his brilliance as a storyteller - as he weaves together the dreams of Kate, the girl and her family... on a single night of magic.

Kate, the Cat and the Moon Avis

Children's Book of the Week - Sunday Times

'As Kate becomes a cat and has feline adventures, images of the moon, stars, girl and cat, and the idea of dreams, reappear with variations in a satisfying interplay... This takes the Was it all a dream? formula and makes it into something new and imaginative' - Culture Section, The Sunday Times

David Almond's poetic text barely tells a story; instead it provides a background for imaginations to soar. The dreamy world that he creates for Kate and the Cat to explore is made real in Stephen Lambert's painterly illustrations.'

'A book for bedtime that entertains through wonder rather than high drama is an unusual treat; this is one to savour. - Julia Eccleshare, The Guardian

David Almond is a fine writer, one of the very finest we have. He is simply incapable of writing a bad sentence. In THE FIRE-EATERS, his sense of place is unerring. ... It is for me David Almond's best book - yes, more compelling than SKELLIG. For this is a complete book, masterful in every aspect. Almond has never been so self-assured... There is the intensity of family life, wonderfully observed and delicately drawn... fear pervades this book, fears we all know, but there is hope too. And we need that. How we need that. - Michael Morpurgo, Financial Times Magazine

2David Almond's The Fire-Eaters is an exceptional novel. P
