Kathleen Brady is evacuated during WW2 and separated from her two stepbrothers and mother. She lives on Magpie Farm with the Spicer family and falls in loves with the enchanting Chris. However, Kathleen is embarrassed about her background and invents a much grander lifestyle in London than she actually had. She eventually hears that her mother has been killed and that she must return to live with her two stepbrothers. Kathy gets caught up in their money laundering and violent antics and afraid and isolated, she eventually manages to escape back to Magpie farm and settle there. However, the brothers track her down and Kathy must confront them as well as her ever growing feelings for Chris. But will they reveal the lies she spread about her family's prosperity and her role in their dirty dealings? And will it ruin her chances with Chris forever?

Jeanne Whitmee originally trained as an actress and later taught Speech and Drama until taking up writing full-time. She has written many novels including Summer Snow and Wishes and Dreams, which were also published by Robert Hale.
