When Kenneth Wolstenholme introduced the first ever edition of Match of the Day on 22 August 1964, few of the 20,000 BBC2 viewers who tuned in to see Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-2 would have thought that they were witnessing the birth of a great British television institution. Forty years on and the iconic theme tune will once again welcome viewers to the weekend highlights when the Premiership coverage reverts to the BBC in August 2004. The programme returns as a Top 12 and will broadcast weekly on BBC1 on Saturday and Sunday evenings and be repeated on Sunday mornings.
